What to Expect
We are glad you found us. Many people go through TSW unknowingly and without support; suffering immensely without ever knowing why.
Coming here means you’ve made a step in the right direction. Unfortunately TSW is preventable. You should never have developed a dependency in the first place.
Welcome to our community, we will be here to support and prepare you as best we can as you navigate this confusing, scary and difficult path you now find yourself on.
Important things to note:
TSW is not your fault.
It is the result of patients not being provided with the appropriate information and instruction on how to use topical steroids. Monitoring your usage and prescribing you the appropriate amount of steroids is the doctors job, not yours.
TSW is not severe eczema.
It is not a skin condition caused by genetics or environmental triggers. It is a dependency and withdrawal from a prescription medicine.
Going through TSW does not cure your eczema.
If you have had eczema or ‘atopic dermatitis’ before TSW, it is likely this is the condition your skin will return to after TSW. Your skin should be much much calmer and more under control, however you may still experience underlying eczema.
Topical steroid addiction is not a psychological addiction.
Your body unknowingly becomes physically addicted, in other words, your skin does not know how to function on its own without topical steroids.
There is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ way to navigate TSW.
Everyone’s skin is different - some heal while using moisturiser, others heal without using it. Just because something appears to work for someone else doesn’t mean it’ll work for you. Trial and error is key, whilst making sure you feel as comfortable and happy as possible.
Doctors did not intentionally make you ill.
Some TSW sufferers completely lose all trust in doctors and modern medicine. Whilst this is understandable, it is an incredibly dangerous and damaging idea to promote. It is incredibly important that you maintain a relationship with your GP or dermatologist.
